Hi! I’m Jessie
Welcome to my Northbird blog!
Here’s a little bit about me:
My husband and I have three sweet little girls and our aussie dog “Mika”. We live in a tiny, remote town in northern Ontario, Canada.
On this blog you will find fun activities and resources for kids/homeschooling, creative recipes, and ideas for natural living. I also enjoy foraging, gardening, songwriting, food preservation, photography and making things from scratch for our home!
I’m a nurse by trade, but have become a full time mom since 2020. I’m no fancy chef, but I do enjoy collecting easy, healthy and affordable meals that are gold for busy moms, and I am excited to share what I have been learning with you!
Many of my postings will feature shelf stable products (like dried beans, and self-dehydrated produce) and also how to grow your own nutritious greens all year long. We have learned a few tips on keeping the grocery budget lower while living in the north, and hope that this blog is a helpful resource to you!

Follow along for updates on our personal story of living in the north, and all the joys and family silliness that are recorded on “The Mom Page“.
A Few Interesting Facts About Me…
- I was homeschooled with my four siblings until grade 12
- “Over the Rainbow” is one of my all time favourite songs
- I am descended from Sir Francis Bacon on one side, and the famous poet William Shakespeare’s sister on the other (my grandfather still carried the Shakespeare name)
- Community Theatre helped me through some tough times when I was younger. After a few years I played Dorothy in “The Wizard of Oz” (and yes, got to sing my favourite song!), followed by Peter in Peter Pan.
- I worked for a few summers as a camp counsellor and drama teacher
- I spent several months when I was 20 living in Thailand and Japan for a missions outreach
- I spent several summers in northern British Columbia doing tree planting in the mountains
- I am a nurse, and love doing community-based nursing!
- When our first daughter was born, we took a year off to travel to do “Youth With A Mission”, and lived in Cambodia for several months (not the easiest thing to live in a foreign country with a baby!)

I’m excited to share my journey with you of living in the north, and I’d love to hear from you! Feel free to comment below or email me if you have any questions or comments on this blog.
Thanks for stopping by! God bless you…
Jessie
